“Objects that we can only marvel at”
Wiebke Siem awarded the Goslar Kaiser Ring

It’s considered to be one of the most renowned art prizes in the world. The Goslar Kaiser Ring Award has been given to internationally known artists such as Matthew Barney, Andreas Gursky, and Olafur Eliasson. After all these big names, this year’s prizewinner comes as a surprise: in honoring Wiebke Siem, the jury honors a position that has yet to be discovered by a wider public. The Berlin-based artist’s work has been part of the Deutsche Bank Collection since the 1990s. During this time, Siem began attracting early attention with sculptures in which she transformed everyday objects such as clothing and toys, wigs, hats, and handbags into oversized abstract objects in wood or fabric.

Social role models and a primarily male-dominated modernism—these are the themes Siem has been exploring since her art studies at Hamburg’s Hochschule für bildende Künste in the early ’80s. Also teaching there at the time was Franz Erhard Walther, whose interactive fabric objects incorporated the viewer as part of the actual work. Like ironic echoes of these icons of participatory sculpture, Siem designed art made to be worn: remarkably patterned dresses and hats sewn together from geometric forms. These works, which were clearly influenced by a New Wave aesthetic, explore the boundaries between art and clothing. This is evident in her drawings from the Deutsche Bank Collection, which are designs for handbags and hats that function simultaneously as fashion accessories and sculptural objects.

Siem’s installations could also be stage sets for absurd psychodramas: a cross between a lamp and a woman dangles from the ceiling of a 1950s middle-class kitchen, while a creature made from balls of fabric with spindly arms and a long Pinocchio-like nose lurks in the bedroom closet. “Siem’s sculptures have a tremendous aura or presence. Their power resides in the fact that they blend a variety of languages: the familiar and the unfamiliar, the known and the unknown. They are deeply uncanny.” They are, as the Kaiser Ring jury has stated, “objects that we can only marvel at.” Wiebke Siem will be awarded the Kaiser Ring on October 11, 2014 in Goslar. Following the award ceremony, an exhibition of the artist’s work will open in the Mönchehaus Museum there.
