Twelve photographers – twelve "fleeting moments." This time, the art calendar of the Deutsche Bank that will be taking us through the coming year is dedicated to the wide spectrum and continuing relevance of contemporary landscape photography. The collection’s photographic works, which can also be seen in the exhibition Fleeting Moments in the Lobby Gallery of the Deutsche Bank in New York, open our eyes to individual mood and collective history. The calendar for 2003 and the New York exhibition unite both internationally renowned and young artists, exploring the subject of landscape from a variety of perspectives.

The various formal approaches examine the shifting relationship between people and their environments, while at the same time posing the traditional questions as to meaning, perception, and orientation. Each of these fleeting moments creates its own specific landscape image and approaches its subject in an individual way. Thus, artists such as Iska Jehl, Stefan Huber, or Bernhard Martin take a playful approach using the technique of collage and digital manipulation to create their own landscapes, while Thomas Struth, Frank Darius, and Olafur Eliasson offer a seemingly objective view of a given environment. While Christian Müller and Thomas Florschütz examine organic natural forms in close-up views, the panorama format and broad horizon in the works of Andreas Gursky and Axel Hütte refer to the tradition of Romantic landscape painting.

These fleeting moments will accompany us throughout the coming year, long after the calendar has already been sold out. Each month, one photographic work will be introduced and discussed on the internet pages of the collection of the Deutsche Bank as the “Picture of the Month.” A short tour of our pages offers a preliminary overview of the Fleeting Moments. We would also like to strongly recommend a visit to the exhibition in the Lobby Gallery of the Deutsche Bank in New York. The gallery can be found on the ground floor of the bank building at 31 West 52nd street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The show will remain up until February 16, 2003, and is open each day from 9 AM to 6 PM.
