Within Reach of Hand or Eye
Roman Ondák at the K21 in Dusseldorf

In April, Roman Ondák, Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year,” will create a spectacular project at the Deutsche Guggenheim titled Do not walk outside this area. But there will already be an exhibition of the Slovakian artist’s works in Germany before that time. Now, the K21 in Dusseldorf presents Within Reach of Hand or Eye. Forming the center of the show is the new work The Hill Seen from Afar (2011) – an artificial hill with a miniature tree at the peak that Ondák has installed in the middle of the exhibition space. Paradoxically, one can only view Ondáks artwork from up close. As with his other works, The Hill Seen from Afar plays with our perception and the conventions of presenting art. Ondáks installation Across That Place (2008-2011) investigates the Panama Canal zone, which once belonged to the US, while Eclipse (2011) presents itself as absurd architecture—a life-sized roof construction whose remnants are scattered on the floor of the exhibition space. Since his much-acclaimed work for the Venice Biennale of 2009, Ondák is regarded as one of today’s most important young artists to carry on the traditions of conceptual and process-based art in a completely independent way.
