Deutsche Bank Opening New KunstHalle in Berlin

It’s actually something like a second opening. At the beginning of April, some 2,000 artists contributed works to the 24-hour exhibition “Make Art.” Thousands of visitors came. Now the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin is officially opening with the show “Imran Qureshi  – Artist of the Year 2013.”

The KunstHalle’s program is ambitious. “We want to create an open, international, and experimental platform for contemporary art here in the capital Berlin,” said Stefan Krause, Member of the Management Board of Deutsche Bank and responsible for the bank’s global art program, at the press conference for the opening. André Schmitz, Permanent Secretary for Cultural Affairs of the Federal State of Berlin, added: “With its KunstHalle, Deutsche Bank is pointing the way for the art metropolis Berlin. The new institution is a clear commitment to the city with a national and international scope.”

The Deutsche Bank KunstHalle is opening with the Pakistani painter Imran Qureshi, who is showing a solo exhibition of his work in Europe for the first time. In a unique way, he combines traditional motifs and techniques of miniature painting with contemporary forms and current topics. Until August 4, 2013, large paintings, an expansive installation, and a cycle of miniature paintings will be on view.

A focal point of the KunstHalle’s concept is cooperative ventures with changing international museums and collections, as well as with partners in Berlin. In the fall of 2013, the exhibition Painting Forever! (within the framework of Berlin Art Week) will open. It is a joint project conceived by the KunstHalle, the Berlinische Galerie, the KW Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Neue Nationalgalerie. Previously, in the summer of 2013, the KunstHalle will show the format “SÜDEN,” an exhibition, music, and performance program with international fellows and alumni of the artists’ house Villa Romana in Florence, with which the bank's foundation is affiliated. Exhibitions are also planned with another longtime partner, the Guggenheim Foundation. In cooperation with the Neue Nationalgalerie, a unique homage to the pioneering Zero artist Otto Piene is being planned for 2014.

Cooperation with the Tate Modern in London is also new: In 2014 an exhibition series will be launched presenting pioneering artists from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The KunstHalle is also breaking new ground in connection with the Deutsche Bank Collection. In keeping with an ambitious new concept, changing guest curators from all over the world will be invited to conceive their own exhibitions from the corporate collection.Victoria Noorthorn from Buenos Aires will be the guest curator in 2013. Her show, entitled THE CIRCLE WALKED CASUALLY, will begin this November. The guest curator for 2015 will be Ivo Mesquita, director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo.
